8 March, 2012
Patrons coming to see the latest Shakespearean drama production at St Luke’s Grammar School will be transported into a Steampunk version of Much Ado About Nothing, one of William Shakespeare’s most enduring and popular plays. The production, directed by award winning Australian actress and director, Anne Looby, showcases the acting talents of St Luke’s students from Years 7 to 11.
“I’m very impressed with the talent and enthusiasm of the students. They rehearsed a couple of times a week during the last term of 2011 and now we have the challenge of pulling it all together by week 7 of Term 1. They’ve embraced this romantic comedy of errors with gusto, and are creating brave and energetic performances – with some showing understanding and insight well beyond their years,” she said.
According to Delia Hughes, the play’s producer and Head of Drama at St Luke’s Grammar School, “We wanted to transpose a traditional play that is part of the current school curriculum, into a contemporary and meaningful setting and Steampunk seems to fit the bill – especially with the moral dilemmas that Much Ado About Nothing introduces.”
Steampunk is a popular genre combining science fiction, fantasy, history, and speculative fiction. It generally involves a setting combining Victorian-era steam power, science and innovation with styling from the Victorian era.
“Using Steampunk as a starting point for the design of the production has allowed us to contextualise the Victorian morals within a contemporary fantasy world,” said Ms Looby. “We’ve used a lot of contemporary music too, much of which the students have chosen, and this musical element also adds a modern flavour to the play.”
The lead roles for the St Luke’s production of Much Ado About Nothing are played by: Jayson Gilchrist as Benedick; Anna Ritchie as Beatrice; Timothy Boulton as Claudio; Maya Skidmore as Hero and Lewis Hastie as Dogberry, the Constable and master of malapropisms.
Evening performances will be held in the Auditorium, St Luke’s Grammar School, Tango Rd, Dee Why on 14, 15, 17 March, 2012. Tickets are available through Trybooking.
