31 August, 2011
Based on their outstanding performances, six students qualify for the upcoming Australian Championships
For the tenth year in a row, the St Luke's Grammar School Snowboarding and Skiing team competed in the NSW State Snowboarding and Skiing Championships which were held in Perisher last week. The 7-strong St Luke's ski and snowboard team competed in both team and individual events.
The performance of the Division 1 (Years 11 - 12) team, comprising of Gemma Woolley, Tonya Sandvoss and Lily Hewitson, ensured that they qualified for all the Snowboarding events at the forthcoming Subaru Australian Interschools Championships to be held at Falls Creek in mid-September.
Year 7 student, Harry Hewitson came 5th in Snowboard GS, qualifying for the Australian Championships, while the Div 3 Snowboard GS team (Years 7 - 8) comprising Harry Hewitson and Hugo Winchester were placed 11th in the team event.
The Division 5 Boys team, (Kindergarten - Year 4), of Tommy Goldsby-Smith and Martin Kapr finished 5th in both the Snowboard GS and Snowboard X races and in doing so, also qualified for the Snowboard X National Championships.
"This is the first time a St Luke's Primary team has qualified for the highest competition level in a very competitive category against strong teams from The Kings School, Redlands, Scots College, Snowy Mountains Grammar, Newport Public School and Jindabyne Central School - to name a few," said Nigel Wickham, Dean of Students and Snowsports Coordinator.
"And also in a first for St Luke's, five of our students have qualified for individual events: Martin Kapr, Tommy Golbsy-Smith, Tonya Sandvoss and Gemma Woolley, with Year 12 student Gemma, qualifying for two separate individual events. This is a terrific result and congratulations to the whole School Snowports Team," he said.
The Subaru Australian Interschools Championships to be held at Falls Creek, Vic, from 7 - 11 September, brings together the best young snow sports athletes in Australia. Competitors represent their school and State and compete for an Australian title. To participate in the Subaru Australian Interschools SnowSports Championships, competitors must be a member of a top five placed team or finish in the top ten as an individual in their own state Interschools SnowSports Championships.
