  • St Luke's Grammar students continued success at the Australian Ski and Snowboarding Championships

    14 September, 2011

Building on their recent success at the NSW State Snowboarding and Skiing Championships, six St Luke's Grammar School students competed in the recent Subaru Australian Interschools Championships held at Falls Creek, Victoria.

The Subaru Australian Interschools Championships brought together the best young snow sports athletes in Australia. Competitors represented both their school and State and to compete for an Australian title.

"In the highly competitive Secondary Schools category, where some students are trained in international development programs, it was great to see that kids who train in alternative but related sports such as surfing and skateboarding can also succeed in snow sports," said Jann Robinson, Principal at St Luke's Grammar School.

In the individual Snowboard Boarder Cross (BX), Year 12 student, Gemma Woolley,  came 3rd overall following fast times in both runs. Gemma was also ranked 8th in the very competitive Snowboard GS.

In Division 3, Year 7 student Harry Hewitson achieved a ranking of 6th in the individual Snowboard GS from a starting field of 35 competitors.

In a first for the School, St Luke's fielded a strong Primary team at this high level of competition in 2011. In both the Division 5 Snowboard team events (GS and BX), St Luke's Grammar was represented by the Primary Year 4 team comprising of Tommy Goldsby-Smith and Martin Kapr. In Snowboard GS they achieved a great ranking of 5th, while in Snowboard BX, they were placed 7th overall.

Martin Kapr also competed in the Division 5 Cross Country Classic achieving a ranking of 10th out of a registered field of 25 competitors. "This was a particularly strong performance by Martin as the race was run in the Classic Technique, required by the Victorian host's competition rules," Jann said.

"Overall, this has been a terrific year for our St Luke's Snowsports Team, with both great team and individual performances and we're all looking forward to an equally exciting season in 2012," said Jann.
