  • St Luke's Students Clear Winners in the 2011 Warringah Young Writer's Competition

    24 October, 2011

St Luke’s Gifted and Talented students win all prizes in Year 8 category at the 2011 Warringah Young Writer’s Competition

St Luke’s students have taken out all the Year 8 Awards in the 2011 Warringah Young Writer’s Competition.  Set with the task of writing an original work on any theme or topic, but including the word ‘bubbles’ somewhere in the story, the Year 8 writers each came up with engaging examples of creative writing.

According to Mrs Kris Watts, Assistant Head of English at St Luke’s Grammar School, all five winners are part of the Year 8 English Extension Program. “These five students, Alexandra Oni, Emma Hoyle, Brendan Dawson, Sarah Mitchell and Olivia Learmont are Year 8 students who have been identified by their teachers as having a gift for English and so have been selected to participate in the Headland Program.”

The St Luke’s Headland Gifted and Talented Program employs a range of strategies to inspire, engage and encourage students to achieve, for example, higher-order thinking skills, independent thinking and learning. “And the voluntary participation in competitions such as Warringah Young Writer’s Competition as part of our English Extension Program, certainly spurs our student’s creativity. They just thrive on challenges such as this,” she said.

Alexandra Oni was announced as the Winner for her 750-word creative writing that focused on a girl who lived in her own little bubble.  Runner-Up Emma Hoyle’s story explored mistaken identity. Brendan Dawson was Highly Commended for his narrative on grief and receiving Encouragement Awards were Sarah Mitchell and Olivia Learmont.

All the students won Book Prizes and an invitation to participate in the Festival of Children’s Literature at Belrose Library.

The Warringah Library Services Young Writer’s Competition aims to encourage local young writers to test their skills against other wordsmiths, and also offers them the chance to have their work read by an established author and showcased on the Libraries’ website.

“It was a terrific result and as a follow-up activity, we are now compiling a book of all our entries for our own School Library. This means that other St Luke’s students will be also able to enjoy these great examples of creative writing,” said Mrs Watts.
