Overseas Students
St Luke's Grammar School welcomes students from overseas and has a long standing successful Overseas Student Program. In recent years a student from China achieved the School's highest University Admissions Index (99.6) and placed first in the State in Mathematics Extension 1.
The success of the Overseas Student Program depends on all students being able to satisfactorily cope with the academic program as well as participate fully in the life of the School. As such, there are four pre-requisites which must be fulfilled:
Pre-Requisite 1 - Competence in English
Overseas Students must demonstrate that they have studied their preferred subject choices in their School of origin and have achieved at a high level in their home countries prior to entry into St Luke's. Generally, Overseas Students will have continuity of study for the years at home as well as in Australia. St Luke's will not accept students where continuity of study cannot be demonstrated.
Overseas Students must also be able to demonstrate competence in English. All Overseas Students are required to complete a minimum course of 20 weeks study at an Australian Language College prior to entry into St Luke's.
St Luke's will request the chosen English College to provide the School with monthly progress reports as to the applicant's levels of achievement. It is St Luke's expectation that students will enter the School with at least Upper Intermediate level English necessary for Years 10 & 11. In order to meet these standards, students may need to spend up to 12 months in Language study at an Australian Language College.
In assessing applications, a rigorous review of student information is undertaken. Any files that are incomplete will not be assessed
Pre-Requisite 2 - Satisfactory Academic Achievement
It is essential that the student has successfully achieved the necessary academic background to enable the student to commence the course for which he/she wishes to enrol. Evidence of prior academic achievement needs to be submitted with the Application to Enrol.
Pre-Requisite 3 - Homestay Accommodation
Irrespective of age, all Overseas Students are expected to live in the same house as, and under the direct supervision of their guardian or a School approved Homestay family.
Generally you should expect to pay between $250 - $280 per week for homestay services. Most homestay providers operate on the basis of providing two meals a day (breakfast and dinner). You should factor into your expectations the cost of lunches. St Luke's has an excellent Canteen which opens for breakfast, recess and lunch. If you allow $10 per day, you should have a very wide choice of food for recess and lunch. You can, of course, spend less than this if you choose.
As part of the Overseas Student Orientation, students will be given a detailed 'Student Handbook' outlining Homestay Accommodation arrangements in detail.
Pre-Requisite 4 - Guardian and Student Welfare Arrangements
Irrespective of age, all Overseas Students must have a responsible adult appointed as his/her guardian. It is usual that St Luke's will appoint the guardian. The guardian is to act as a parent in all matters relating to School policy, order and discipline. Please note that even when a student is 18 years of age or older the School still requires the same parental/guardian supervision as for all other students.
