Beyond the Call of Statistical Data
The tendency to measure the value of a school, is based solely upon the public measures of results in state or national testing. Ultimately, this fails to capture the richness of school experience and the contribution that schools make to social capital. There are teachers who go well beyond the classroom in equipping students to be compassionate global citizens. One such teacher is the Reverend Philip Andrew (known as ‘the Rev’ by the students) at St Luke’s Grammar School, Dee Why, who in 2005, 2007 and 2009 has taken groups of Year 10 and Year 11 students to Uganda to build homes for AIDS orphans looked after by the Watoto Children’s Ministry Mission.
“I’m fortunate enough to work at a school that my children attend, where they have been surrounded by a culture of generosity. During 2009 the School has raised $120,000 for charity. This is a massive amount of money for a school with about 500 families,” said Reverend Phil.
The Charities the School support are all about giving a life changing impact mainly for the recipients but also for the School Community. The Principal, Mrs Jann Robinson commented, “Society can sometimes make us feel that speaking about God is unfashionable, but it is in fact, the love and generosity of Jesus which inspires us to be loving and generous”.
While HSC results provide a useful reference in measuring schools, there is a wealth of non-measurable experiences that occur in schools on a daily basis, that are often overlooked. St Luke’s Grammar School is certainly proud of the work that the staff put in to achieve consistently strong academic outcomes for both girls and boys. In addition though, the School is extremely grateful for the extra effort of staff, such as Reverend Phil Andrew, who often go above and beyond the call of statistical data, to instil in students the desire and the power to make a difference in the world of others.
