NSW High School Surfing Titles Champions
On Wednesday 20 July, two St Luke’s Grammar School Boys Surfing Teams (16s and Opens) travelled to Wollongong to compete in the 2022 Ocean & Earth NSW High School Surfing Titles. The event is a two-person competition with heats of 20 minutes requiring surfers to take turns in the water, with the best-scored wave from each surfer counting to the overall points.
Our Opens Boys team (Gor O and Ethan D) made a solid start, comfortably progressing through their heat and semi-final en-route to the finals. In a four team final, where waves were difficult to come by, the boys were sitting in first place mid-way through the allocated time. Unfortunately, the boys weren’t able to secure another wave with the other teams all bettering their scores, meaning the boys finished 4th in the State in a great overall performance.
Our 14s Boys team (Sol G and Sullivan T) started steady with a 2nd place finish in their first heat and kept improving throughout the day, taking out their semi-final before heading into the final. Sullivan set the standard early in the final with a 6.83 ride, the best of all the first surfers, before tagging Sol who immediately grabbed a strong wave of his own scoring 8.33. By the halfway point of the final the boys held an unbeatable lead and finished a comfortable 2.63 points ahead of second place to be crowned State Champions. The boys have now qualified for the Australian Junior Surfing Titles in November/December at Stradbroke Island.
Congratulations to both teams on a fantastic effort and we wish Sol and Sullivan all the best at the Australian titles later in the year.
